Global Outreach

Outreach comes in many forms at Mesa Verde UMC. The church is active in the community, provides hands-on and monetary support for others in the U.S. and Mexico, and raises funds for international projects. Members and friends are generous with their time and talents, and come together in community to reach out to others. Projects are run through a number of committees and commissions, including those found in the below.

Missions Commission
Regular programs include a monthly Mission Bucks program and Sudan support project, a quarterly Red Cross blood drive, an annual Alternative Christmas event, and annual missionary support. Disaster and crisis support, such as that for Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Indonesia, and local California wildfires, usually comes under the auspices of this group, too.

United Methodist Women (UMW) The local chapter raises funds largely for local organizations. UMW members may also make a pledge to the Women's Division of the Methodist Board of Global Missions. Pledges go towards national and international humanitarian relief.

Mesa Verde Youth Peace The youth participate in one week long"Work Team" project annually, usually head up projects in support of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and take the lead in many one-time projects.

Environment & Justice Team This group helps educate the church on major political, economic, environmental, and judicial issues facing the world today. They are the "activist" arm of the church.

The church truly is a family, and every effort is made to help a family member in need. Our Stephen Ministry provides ongoing and long-term emotional support. Other members deliver hot meals to those in crisis or coming out of the hospital. And our pastor spends much of his time visiting the sick and those in need. Not all support comes officially from the church, but it comes nontheless. Jane McComb told of the church member who bought her a coat one winter while she was fighting cancer and just didn't have the strength to go shopping. Another tells of a phone call she received after having not shown up a church for several Sundays; the caller just wanted to make sure she was all right. And these stories go on and on. Providing spiritual and practical help and support to those in our church family is part of what Mesa Verde UMC is all about.
